History Of The Spring Ride and Social

The Spring Ride was instigated in 2007 by Dwight and Pat Harris to get the riding season off to a good start and to polish up rusty riding skills. It was a chance to renew acquaintances with fellow Club Members and socialize over dinner after the winter hiatus.

A highlight of this Ride was a group photo of all the riders in front of our banner and individual keepsake photos presented to each rider. Initially all the individual photos were posted on a back board on the Clubhouse wall during the year’s riding season.

Over the years, The Spring Ride has continued to be the event that starts the riding season off for us.

Event Comments:
2023 17th Annual Spring Fun Run

This year’s weather wasn’t very good but by the time the Ride started the weather had gotten better and even started to dry up.

This was a different year. We started from Trev Deeley’s in Vancouver instead of at the Clubhouse in Surrey.

The Route was 167 kilometers long and took you from Vancouver to Richmond through Delta/Surrey into Langley. From there into Abbotsford and into Mission, through Pitt Meadows and back to Surrey. It took approximately 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and in some spot’s pedestrians walking along the dyke.

This year’s Poker Run Winners are:
First Place with a two pair 7’s and 4’s hand was Wes Jamison.
Second Place with a pair of Aces hand was Kevin Kinneard.
Third Place with a pair of Jack’s hand was Julie Blackburn.
Fourth Place with a pair of 9’s hand was Bill Wells.
The Booby Prize went to Dwight Harris with a pair of 7’s.

We had 17 sign ups. There was one small accident reported. The rider laid down his bike at low speed. Our members stayed with him. He was not injured but the bike had to be towed.

Dinner was Chili with cheese and sour cream; hot dogs with cheese, onions, sauerkraut, ketchup, and mustard; or cream of turkey soup. You could have any combination of that. Chili dogs and soup seemed to be the top choice.

Organizer Bill Talley would like to thank Dave Kingston for taking the pictures. John Taylor, Dave Seifert, Jim Sloat , Pat Mainardi and Jim Brooke for looking after checkpoints. Jackie Heppler and Virginia Billing for Signup and deciphering the poker hands. Lois Wilson and John Fell for helping in the kitchen. Don Bowman, Jim Sloat, Vern billing and Dave Kingston for cone pick up and tear down at Deeley’s. Ross Dayton for picture development and jumping in where needed. Jackie Heppler again for reading out the poker cards and everyone else that jumped in to help with clean up.

I would like to thank everyone but especially the GVMC Members that supported this Ride. It would not have been a success without your support.

Stay tuned for the 2024 Spring Fun Run so you don’t miss out on a great ride!
